As a highly valued Lusso client, we were delighted to talk with David about his latest project - the two year long renovation of his family home which he carried out with his wife, Stephanie.

Overlooking London’s Richmond Park, this listed property is David’s biggest project to date. Built in 1927 for an American film director, it replicates the build and structure of a home in Monte Carlo, bringing a taste of the Mediterranean to the affluent London borough. After purchasing the property and securing permission to transform it into a forever family home, the two year-long renovation was finally completed in December 2022. Lusso’s fixtures and fittings can be found across its beautiful bathrooms, including the Vasca freestanding bath and opulent basins from our highly sought after stone and marble ranges.

How would you describe your interior design style?

I will always choose classical or historical design over new build or contemporary. For houses and interiors, I am sympathetic to the architectural style of the era when the house was built. I follow the same rules with restoring cars. I adore the history and stories that make that particular item, whether that is a classic car or a vintage watch.

With the house in Richmond which we have just renovated over two years, an architect described it as an architectural mongrel, which doesn't sound particularly complimentary, but it describes it perfectly as the original designer was clearly inspired by so many different eras of design. I, therefore, felt like we were not restricted, and could really put our own mark on the house and make it our own without much restriction.

What’s the most important aspect of home design for you?

The flow of the house is always important from the design and build aspect. I don’t like to waste space in houses, I feel every part should be utilised. I’ve always loved the simplicity of Georgian design. Simplicity and symmetry play a big part in my interior design. I will always want a home to be inviting, warm and cosy, never to be clinical and cold. A lot can be achieved with textures and composition rather than bold and bright colours.

You’ve opted for the Lusso Vasca bath, Arabescato marble vanity unit and gold fittings - how do they tie in with your design vision?

My wife is Greek; she loves marble, gold and Greek influences. I wanted to design her a dream master ensuite. She fell in love with the Arabescato basin, so I really based the design around this. I took the subtle mix of colours of the basin to flow through the rest of the ensuite. I found a porcelain tile with the same marbling and colours, and cut them large enough so I could book match them. The stunning Vasca bath I knew I wanted as soon as I began researching for this project. It’s a classical, but contemporary, clean stone design. The design was then complemented by the Lusso brushed gold floorstanding bath taps, basin taps and showers.

The service at Lusso was exemplary from day one, with incredible knowledge of their products but keeping me up to date with delivery and availability times which is essential when renovating a house

What is your favourite product from Lusso?

It’s so very difficult to choose my favourite product, but considering that the Arabescato basins are so individual and so rare to find within the UK market, I would have to say it would be this piece.

What have been the most challenging aspects of the renovation?

There will always be complications and hurdles with renovations, but I love being on site and seeing a beautiful but tired house come back to life. Re-establishing the grandeur of the property was our main aim, as there is such history and thus hopefully it will be around for another 100 years and more.

This is your third major property project - based on your experience do you have any tips or advice for anyone renovating a home?

As I said, there are always going to be challenges with house renovations. Finding a good builder, one you can fully trust and rely on, is the most important part. Richard Sadler from Onyx London renovated my house in Fulham, so there was no one else I would have chosen for the Richmond project which was three times the size. Onyx are unique as they combine decades of experience of Richard with the architecture and interior design expertise of Elizabeth, his business partner. They also fully supported us with the difficulties of planning and worked with me closely throughout the whole process.

Do you have any other renovations in the pipeline?

After finishing a renovation, I always need a little break and to be honest it will take many years to get the house exactly how I want it, especially a renovation of this size. The next renovation will be a classic car project, and we are already in the design stage.

How would you describe the level of service you received from Lusso?

Good customer service is a rarity in today's world. The service at Lusso was exemplary from day one, with incredible knowledge of their products but keeping me up to date with delivery and availability times which is essential when renovating a house. The Lusso collection is brilliantly curated, making choosing a full design very easy. I also love supporting such a brilliant British brand. Lusso and the founders are incredible examples of how service should be for customers.
